Each year Millay Colony for the Arts invites up to 55 individuals for month long residencies through the colony's application process. The application deadline each year is October 1st; submissions are considered for the next calendar year. Residency sessions are held each month from April through November.

In each discipline, decisions are made by juries of artists, critics and academics. Your work is presented anonymously to the jury and is considered solely on the merit of your artist statement and work sample. Please keep these factors in mind as you prepare your application. It is very important that you do not include your name anywhere on your artist statement or work samples as you may be disqualified if they are within the body of work shown to the jurors.

CAREFULLY REVIEW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE DISCIPLINE YOUR ARE APPLYING UNDER BEFORE YOU BEGIN THE APPLICATION PROCESS.

Along with individual applications available within each discipline are the additional residency options:

Collaborations
Each member of the team can apply individually, submitting two separate applications, fees, artist’s statements and only one work sample if applying in the same discipline. If collaborating in two different disciplines, apply using individual work samples. Each discipline will be viewed by its own jury.

Two week residencies
To accommodate artists not able to attend a month-long residency, offering two, two-week sessions, held in the month of September only.

TO APPLY: The application process for the two-week residencies is the same as that for the month-long residencies. Apply under your discipline, and making a note within the contact info section of your application, your preference for either the first half of the session (Session 1), or the last half of the September residency (Session 2). Session dates are determined each year after the Oct 1st deadline.

Group Residency
Millay Colony awards one five-day Group Residency each year to a group of between 3-7 collaborating artists. This is available to any artist group, including writers, musicians and bands, dance troupes, galleries, etc, or simply individuals collaborating on a project. The residency my be used to support the creation and dissemination of new or revived art works.

TO APPLY: The basis for the application are work samples of individuals within the group , a statement detailing the history of the collaboration or organization, and a project description describing the proposed activities if invited to a residency.

Virtual residencies
Millay Colony will assign one Virtual Residency per year; specifically for working artists and/or artists with children who can not spend prolonged time away from home but can benefit from the support of a residency in modified form.

The 'Virtual Resident' would participate in one of The Millay Colony's month-long residencies, staying at the colony either on weekends or a minimum of four days within the residency month and receiving a stipend of $1,000 total to assist in securing time off/childcare/travel to & from the colony.

Work Sample: Create a Work Sample of 30 pages or less in manuscript format. Work samples can be work in progress or already published work; whatever you feel will make for the strongest application. Manuscripts must be double spaced, using an 11 or 12 pt. Font.
Do not include and biographical or identifying information in your Work Sample. Make certain your name is not on any of the work sample pages.

Combine your Artist Statement and Work Sample into a single document. Make sure the Artist Statement is on page 1 and the Work Sample starts on Page 2. Save the document as a PDF, making sure your name is not anywhere within the body of your work.

Biographical Statement & Preferred Residency Dates: Write your name, contact info including address and email, gender and date of birth. Underneath write no more than 2 paragraphs listing any relevant professional accomplishments such as awards, exhibitions, published works, etc. Also, tell us how you heard of the Millay Colony. This is for the administrative file and will not be seen by the jury members.

Residencies are available April through November, and last for approximately three and a half weeks, along with 2-week residencies also available in September. Group Residency - $35.00

Millay Colony awards one five-day Group Residency each year to a group of between three-seven collaborating artists. The residency is awarded through an application process and includes private bedrooms/studios, public meeting places and all meals.

The residency is available to any artists' groups, including musicians and bands, publishing collectives, theater and dance troupes, galleries, etc, or simply individuals collaborating on a project.

The group awarded the residency will be able to stay for 4-5 days at the end of one of the regular residency months, and will include private bedrooms, studios and all meals. Travel to & from the colony will be the responsibility of the group members.

TO APPLY:
1) Include a description detailing the history of the collaboration or organization, including any available individual bios;
2) a one-page project description of proposed activities for the residency;
3) any available work samples from either the group or individuals within the collaborating group. This can include writing samples up to 30 pages, up to 10 art images, or up to a 2 minute video.
4)Indicate the top two months your group could stay at the colony. (The residency will last 4-5 days and held toward the end of the normal residency months from April-November).
